Beyond the AI Prompt: Teaching the Human Communication Skills That Matter More Than Ever

Graham Seed
Senior Research Manager | Language Assessment & Learning

Sponsored by Cambridge University Press

Abstract

As AI can now perform many tasks traditionally taught in language classrooms, it’s right to ask the question: what’s worth teaching?

This session explores the communication skills that learners still need in an AI-rich world: Drawing on the CEFR’s concept of mediation, Cambridge’s Life Competencies Framework, research on oracy, and Global Englishes, we will consider effective communication across cultures and contexts, with some practical ideas to implement in the classroom. We will also examine the continuing role of human expertise in language assessment, arguing that people remain essential wherever meaningful communication, fairness, and reliable judgement matter most.

10.00–10.45

Do you believe in Magic? The Transformative Power of SEL in Today’s Classroom.

Chantelle Walsh
Teacher Trainer | Mindfulness & Well-being in Education

Sponsored by Macmillan

Abstract

Do you believe in everyday magic in the classroom? Not the storybook kind, but the magic of presence, connection, and care. This session explores the neuroscience behind social and emotional learning (SEL). Through storytelling, imagery, and practical strategies, we will learn how to build belonging, self-belief, and resilience through small, intentional moments that support student learning and well-being.

11.30–12.15

Communication Confidence

Julie Wallis
Teacher Trainer & Educational Leader

Sponsored by IH Milan & San Donato

Abstract

If effective communication is the intended learning output, why do so many learners struggle with anxiety and self-doubt when speaking and interacting in the target language. This presentation will explore evidence-based strategies for building communication confidence with English learners across diverse levels, ages and classroom settings. Drawing on principles of positive psychology and language acquisition research, we will experiment practical activities that can be immediately implemented and integrated into your curriculum. Techniques will include low-pressure speaking activities, peer collaboration frameworks, and scaffolding strategies to help learners develop both linguistic competence and the emotional resilience to use it. You will leave with concrete classroom tools and a framework for creating an environment where even hesitant learners feel empowered to take communication risks and develop genuine fluency and confidence.

12.15–13.00

Get Them Talking! Practical Freer Speaking Activities

Glenn Standish
Director of Studies & Teacher Trainer

Sponsored by IH Milan | San Donato

Abstract

It is important that students get freer speaking practice as much as possible; after all it is part of the learning and language acquisition process. In this fun and interactive session, we will look at a few practical activities which will get your students speaking and discussing freely about a wide range of topics in class. This session has been recently adapted to apply in an online classroom. So come along and get your students speaking!

14.30–15.15

Swipe Right for English! Making Learning Irresistible in the Attention Economy

Lucie Cotterill
Teacher Trainer & Academic Manager

Sponsored by IH Milan & San Donato

Abstract

Are your students finding it harder to focus nowadays? Is their attention span shortening? In today’s attention economy, competing with constant pings and swipes can feel like a losing battle. In this interactive session, we’ll explore why learners struggle to stay focused and what teachers can do about it. You’ll take away a toolkit of low-prep, high-impact language activities designed to grab attention, spark curiosity, and keep students engaged.

The Method We Buried Too Soon? Audiolingualism as a Retrieval Strategy in Modern ELT

Nino Naso
CELTA Tutor · EFL Teacher & Teacher Trainer

Sponsored by IH Milan & San Donato

Abstract

Communicative Language Teaching has long dominated ELT, while many other approaches have been consigned to oblivion on the assumption that they no longer serve us. But do they?

Which begs the question: Have we buried Audiolingualism too soon? Drawing on a classroom-based study, this session revisits a method often dismissed as “outdated” and explores how its principles and techniques may offer an overlooked solution to persistent challenges of retention and language activation in today’s ELT classrooms.

Participants will experience Audiolingual techniques first-hand, critically examine their potential benefits, and leave with a complete bank of ready-to-use activities that can be immediately implemented in their own teaching contexts.
